Pagan holidays 2020

Each year, there are eight major Wiccan holidays that we collectively refer to as the Wheel of the Year. Each one highlights an important aspect of our magickal craft, and celebrating them all is one of the great joys of Wicca.

That being said, some of our holidays have movable dates based around the sun and moon, which can make remembering when they occur a bit of a pain.

Imbolg marks the beginning of spring on the Wiccan Wheel of the Year. For Wiccans, the holiday is known as Ostara, but all around the world this day is celebrated by many others as the spring equinox. This is one of two days a year when both day and night are equal in length. Some Wiccans focus on honoring and worshiping the Triple Goddess during this time, while others use it as an opportunity for blessings of all kinds. In the Wiccan Wheel of the Year, we refer to this day as Beltane, but it also goes by other names—most famously, May Day.

This holiday marks the midpoint between the celebrations of the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Litha aka the summer solstice or midsummer is a holiday that marks the high point of the sun—on this day, daylight is longer than it will be at any other time on the calendar.

For Wiccans, this is typically the time we honor the Horned Godand many Litha celebrations can get downright rambunctious in their merriment! The date for Lammas is always August 1st, and this year, that will be a Saturday. Lammas was traditionally the time when the first crops of the year were being harvested. Because of this, the holiday is associated with abundance and growth. Along with Ostara, Mabon is one of the two days a year when both day and night are equal in length.

It is also considered the second harvest festival on the Wiccan Wheel of the Year with the first being Lammas.

The Wheel of the Year is a Pagan metaphor and calendar for the cycle of the seasons. It consists of eight festivals, known as sabbats, spaced at approximately even intervals throughout the year. In many forms of Paganism, the passing of time is seen as cyclical, and is represented by a circle or wheel. The progression of birth, life, decline and death, as experienced in human lives, is echoed in the progression of the seasons.

Many Pagans also see this cycle as echoing the life, death and rebirth of the God and the fertility of the Goddess. As the Wheel originates in the Northern Hemisphere, in the Southern Hemisphere most Pagans advance these dates six months so as to coincide with the natural seasons as they occur in their local climates.

The Pagan Wheel of the Year turns through many significant dates and festivals. The highlights are the eight seasonal Sabbats, and the thirteen Esbats which we celebrate each Full Moon. The Sabbats are divided into two groups. The Lesser Sabbats; Yule, Ostara, Litha and Mabon, fall on the equinoxes and solstices, the dates of which vary slightly from year to year, and they mark the changes of the four seasons.

This seasonal cycle is one of the key ways in which we see the processes of birth, growth, death, and rebirth play themselves out, and the myth of the Wheel of the Year was created to illustrate this cycle.
